Fine, dry particles from various parts of the plant collect inside a vessel that continuously creates dust clouds. To compound the risk, these clouds may require very low ignition sources.<\/p><p>If an explosion does occur, the flame propagates through the fuel-air mixture, the pressure can rupture the primary enclosure, and the escaping pressure can stir up dust inside the building, leading to secondary explosions. Flames also propagate from the primary vessel to others through interconnections, which can lead to secondary explosions.<\/p><p>There are five primary methods of explosion protection for dust collectors.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Containment:\u00a0<\/strong>All components are rated to ~10 bar, which involves a high initial cost.<\/li><li><strong>Inerting:\u00a0<\/strong>Reduces O<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0below flammable level.<\/li><li><strong>Explosion Suppression:\u00a0<\/strong>Extinguishes fireball and suppresses pressure below equipment pressure rating.<\/li><li><strong>Explosion Relief Venting:\u00a0<\/strong>Relief pressure is below equipment pressure rating.<\/li><li><strong>Explosion Isolation:\u00a0<\/strong>Prevents explosion propagation to other areas.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Every application presents its own unique challenges. In general, the larger the value of K<sub>ST<\/sub>, the more rapid the pressure development will occur in a confined explosion condition and the more severe the explosion may be.<\/p><p>Certain products have K<sub>ST<\/sub>\u00a0limitations. For example, there are approval restrictions for passive devices such as flameless vents and flap valves. Passive isolation is also not suitable for gas or hybrid applications. Even active systems may require manufacturer\u2019s third-party approval. For example, if the dust or vapor is toxic, it may not safely release to the atmosphere. Another consideration is whether the fireball can be directed to a safe space, as fireballs can be eight times the volume of the vessel (or more). Flame ejections can sometimes exceed 50\u2019, with the thermal effects going even further.
